Only Lovers Left Alive
Review/Inspiration
I was utterly captivated by the
whole film and I defy that others won’t be equally as passionate with the visual and audio effects. Personally I was engorged by the whole movie. I took
a lot of inspiration for my Collection. From the sets strewn with Persian rugs
in a dilapidated mansion in Detroit ,
to the bright false lights of a modern hospital and then to Tangier, with white
washed walls contrasted against the black sky. The music, which entails a
mixture of soothing Moroccan instruments with undertones of rock, strangely,
marries one another perfectly. Combining the old with the new, heavily laden
with entwining cultural references, creating a dangerous and enticing
soundtrack.
In one scene, which I found the most
captivating, due to its calm like state with low lighting in complete stale
darkness was where the two main characters relax together in their vampiric
lair, and are shown slumped over decrepit furniture, deep under a euphoric high
from the blood, o negative, which they caroused from a sherry glass. On the
gramophone, plays a mournful tune, but not so cheerless that it changes the
mood of the scene entirely. Over this hum, the gentle chatter of the two lovers
contrasts heavily, as they reflect on the last thousand years of each other’s
lives.
Culturally stimulating, set against
night and dark seedy rooms, it felt unnaturally calming and peaceful, there is
no sense of rush or woe, just happiness of living and feeding of one another’s
intellect and awe on how their world is crumbling as the modern world collapses
around them.
Tilda Swinton’s Character, Eve,
plays a very strong, simply elegant vampire. Having seen the world, multiple
times, her view on it has not changed. She finds hope and enlightenment in any
scenario whilst keeping her naturally captivating and enchanting poise
throughout the film. This is the type of woman who I would want to wear my
clothes. Strong, dark, kind and effortlessly refined.
I also took colour palette
inspiration from this film, whites and creams with flashes of burgundy all
submerged in black.
