The Colour White

White

For this project we have been asked to design a denim garment. I wanted to get away from the colour palette of blue, I thought of black but finally decided to go with white denim.
White denim to me seemed firstly to be a contradiction (which appeals). Denim historically was used as a sensible fabric to make work wear clothing. White as a colour is hardly practical for working, (unless in a laboratory).

White has traditionally connotations of purity, innocence and goodness. It contains all the colours of the spectrum yet is calm and serene. It represents both the positive and negative of all colours and still remains neutral even calm. However white can sometimes be too stark and cold, clinical and sterile.

In Western societies white is the preferred colour used for bridal gowns. Here the colour signifies virginity and cleanliness. Doctors wear white to impart a feeling of efficiency, hygiene, calmness and order. White is said to give a feeling of peace and to help alleviate emotional problems.

Other cultures traditionally use white to represent death and mourning. The colour white is representative of new beginnings, the transition from one life to another and a completion.
